In the interim, the board has appointed Shan Shan Wong, the COO, and Christian Laforte, the CTO, as co-CEOs of Stability AI. They will lead the company while the search for a permanent CEO is underway. Jim O’Shaughnessy, the board chairman at Stability AI, expressed his confidence in Wong and Laforte’s ability to guide the company in the development and commercialization of top-tier generative AI products.

Mostaque’s exit follows reports from Forbes that Stability AI was facing difficulties after several key developers resigned. Three of the five original creators of the Stable Diffusion technology have recently left the company. This leadership shake-up at Stability AI coincides with a talent acquisition by Microsoft from rival startup Inflection AI.
Earlier this week, Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind and former CEO of Inflection AI, joined Microsoft as the CEO of a new AI team. Microsoft also recruited several key Inflection AI employees, including co-founder Karén Simonyan, who now serves as the chief scientist of Microsoft AI. With most of Inflection’s staff moving to Microsoft AI, the startup is now shifting its focus to enterprise offerings.
Stability’s main AI product, Stable Diffusion, is widely used for text-to-image generation AI tools. A few weeks ago, Stability released its latest model, Stable Cascade, as an option for researchers on GitHub. To support its research, Stability AI began offering a paid membership for commercial use of its models in December.
